A 77-year-old man was killed and two women were injured Thursday morning, September 10, after a truck struck three pedestrians on a sidewalk in Manhattan’s Chinatown.
The incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. near Bowery and Canal streets. Police said the truck had exited the Manhattan Bridge and was traveling west on Canal Street when it attempted to turn right onto Bowery, mounted the curb, and struck the pedestrians. The truck then rear-ended a van on Bowery.
Video from the scene showed a large truck carrying pallets of wood with a damaged windshield and multiple flat tires.
A witness described hearing what sounded like an explosion before seeing the truck traveling quickly down the street.
The 77-year-old victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The two women were hospitalized in stable condition. The 47-year-old driver of the van was also taken to the hospital.
